Editing Services

"Editing services with Sione is a brilliant investment in the future of your writing."
- Hannah Olsen, author of YA fantasy THE CINDER KNIGHT

An editor with a Master's degree in English Literature and over 15 years providing writers with clear, honest, and constructive feedback, I specialize in developmental editing of young adult, new adult, and adult novels. On occasion, I accept short fiction and nonfiction projects as well as substantive (line) editing work for clients for whom I've previously completed a critique or an assessment.

Editing Rates & Services*

*All rates are in U.S. dollars. Manuscript pages are double-spaced pages, approx. 250-300 words per page. Edit letter pages are single-spaced.

Manuscript Critiques

Are my characters relatable? Does the plot move along at a good pace, or does the book succumb to the Saggy Middle Syndrome? Are there major plot holes? Is the world building consistent and understandable? Is the ending satisfying? These are the types of questions my manuscript critiques are designed to answer, which is what makes them the right choice for writers who want to focus on the storytelling aspects of their novels.

Full manuscript critique - $750 for up to 75,000 words, an additional $50 per 5,000-word block thereafter
This critique of your full manuscript provides developmental feedback tailored to your project's needs that focuses on high-level elements such as genre/category, word count, title, narrative arc, conflict, structure, plot, characterization, world building, and point of view. Includes:
  • An edit letter containing the high-level feedback (minimum 5 pages)
  • A 60-minute voice or video conference to discuss the feedback and formulate a revision plan

Partial manuscript critique - $250
Designed for those who aren't quite ready to commit to a full developmental edit, this package includes a critique of my version of a partial: the first 50 pages, the 5 pages that include the Darkest Moment, and the last 2 pages of your novel (up to 17,100 words total). Feedback focuses on the existing strengths and on the three to four greatest opportunities for further strengthening the pages. Includes:
  • An edit letter containing the high-level feedback (minimum 3 pages)
  • A 60-minute voice or video conference to discuss the feedback and formulate a revision plan

Assessments

If you want to know what kind of first impression your opening pages make on an agent or reader - what will make them want to read more and what might give them a reason to turn away - an assessment is for you. In addition to developmental feedback about genre/category, word count, title, hook, narrative arc, conflict, structure, plot, characterization, world building, point of view, and what readers will expect from the rest of the book, this editing package includes substantive feedback about clarity, flow, transitions/signposting, continuity, and patterns in line and copy editing issues.

All assessments include:
  • Comments and/or Tracked Changes in the margins
  • An edit letter summarizing the feedback
  • A 1-pass critique of your query letter (ql), brief synopsis (bs), or book blurb (bb) up to 600 words
  • A 30-minute voice or video conference to discuss the feedback and next steps

First 5 pages + ql/bs/bb - $50
First 10 pages + ql/bs/bb - $100
First 50 pages + ql/bs/bb - $350 (includes a 60-minute voice or video conference)

The Complete Package

Just as a woodcarver sands a piece of wood in several stages, using finer and finer grit sandpaper for each stage, so the four rounds of editing included in the Complete Package grow progressively more detailed to result in a much more refined final product. Through this process authors gain insights into their particular strengths and opportunities for development as writers and storytellers that they can apply to future writing projects as well. This package is designed for authors who have a readable draft that falls within 10K words of the target word count range for their book's age category and genre and who are ready to spend a good amount of time and energy over the next 6-12 months diving deep into their manuscripts in preparation for querying or self-publication. At a rate of $0.05 a word, it offers a significant savings from paying for these services separately.

The process:
  1. Full manuscript critique; includes an edit letter (min. 5 pages) and a 60-minute voice or video conference to discuss the feedback and finalize the goals for the next draft;
  2. First round of developmental editing after revision; includes in-text comments, an edit letter (min. 3 pages), and a 60-minute voice or video conference to discuss the feedback and finalize the goals for the next draft;
  3. First round of substantive editing after revision; includes in-text comments, an edit letter (min. 3 pages), and a 60-minute voice or video conference to discuss the feedback and finalize the goals for the next draft;
  4. Second round of substantive editing after revision; includes in-text comments, an edit letter (min. 3 pages), and a 60-minute voice or video conference to discuss the feedback, and finalize the revision goals;
  5. A 3-pass critique of the book's query letter, book blurb, or brief synopsis up to 600 words.

Booking

When you contact me to inquire about editing services, I'll ask you a few questions about your project and goals to make sure we're a good fit and to collect the information I need to draft an agreement. Once I have received a signed agreement and your deposit, your editing dates and rates are locked in. Please note that my availability varies greatly; as a general rule, it's a good idea to contact me at least 4 weeks before you'd like the editing work to begin.

Payment

For most services, I require a 50% deposit before the editing work begins, and the remainder is due within 7 days of delivery of the edit letter. Payment plans are available for services over $500. Payment for the Complete Package is spread over five payments. I accept payment by check (U.S. clients only), Zelle, Apple Pay, and PayPal.
