Writing prompt 35

Today's writing prompt is a sentence that popped into my head on my walk a couple of days ago. I find it morbid and disturbing, but I also sense an entire world beneath it waiting to be told. Will you be the one to tell it?

And the screams of the dogs will haunt me until the day I die, for I heard them and did nothing.

    1. Oh, of course! I should've guessed that a horror writer friend would pick up this prompt. Yay! That makes me happy! Can I see when you're done, Chris? Will you be posting it on The Darker Half?

  2. If you were curious: I remember it all so clearly. I was there the day that took Mitzy and about 12 other dogs. I was only a novice, but I was in training, I had to watch. My heart broke; did I really think this was the way to salvation? I didn't know. And I did nothing. Until Mitzy was on the altar. The howling, the look in her eyes and I did nothing. It was after that that I fled the convent. I couldn't be a novice to a group that delighted in torture. I guess I never really thought much of Seteboros. I just served. I had never seen the truth until my convocation into the order; that was when I saw the truth.

I ran. I ran away and they chased me. I tried so hard but they caught me and beat me to death, at least that's what they thought. They left me by the river, in the city, far from the center. Left me to die, thought me dead. Now, I am not dead. I am alive and prepared to take back the city they have taken from me and my family, my Mitzy. I can still hear the whining howls.
